Q: How can I enable external subtitles?
A: There are a few things regarding subtitles display that you should note.
First of all, external subtitles feature is valid only for custom player (and custom video files formats subsequently). If you want to watch native iOS video (mp4, mov, m4v, 3gp) with external subtitles please disable native video player; to do that go to Settings/Players/Video Player and deactivate "Native Player" option.
Secondly, mind that subtitles support depends not only on 8player but also on server functional abilities, and not all the DLNA servers can support subtitles.
If your server does, you will see a dedicated button (Audio & Subtitles) next to volume control; there you can select subtitles for your video (as well as audio track).
If you are not sure that your server supports subtitles feature use "long press" for any video that should contain subtitles and click "Diagnostics". You'll see full information about the video. You can send it to 8player's support and we will check if your server provides for the info about subtitles.

Q: Some video files playback is choppy. Why?
A: You face this problem because time for frame decoding is longer than frame duration (it depends on resolution, bitrate, compression algorithm, etc). Unfortunately mobile processors are not ready for high resolution decoding yet.

Q: How do I activate AirPlay function?
A: AirPlay for:

  • native video formats (mp4, mov, m4v, 3gp): you'll see AirPlay button next to volume control if any AirPlay device is present in your network
  • non-native video formats (avi, mkv, ts, mpg, wmv, asf, flv, ogg, vob, etc.): you should enable screen mirroring (iPhone 4S, 5 and iPad 2, 3)

Q: When I try to play some video files I receive the message the codec for it is unavailable. What does it mean?
A: Some video/audio codecs are covered by license and we cannot distribute them without legal authorization from the patent owner. If you see such a message it means the video you're trying to play contains such a patented codec.

Q: When will patented codecs be available in 8player?
A: We have sent a request to the copyright owners and are waiting for their feedback. As this process does not depend solely on us we cannot estimate how long it will take.
